Wage Gaps: What can we do?
Gender wage gap is a form of gender inequality. However, this is a fact that people usually oversee when talking about women’s rights. Many think that women deserve to earn less than men because of their health condition and ability to work; and those statements are false. In today's society, both men and women deserve the same opportunities and treatments in the workplace. The simple words “hard work pays off” should be applied to everyone regardless of gender, but by just saying those words won’t make any difference -- people have to turn those words into actions. There are several things people should do in order to get rid of the gender wage gap. First, people need to educate themselves on workplace policy and the existence of the gender wage gap; furthermore, they can donate to nonprofit organizations that advocate for women and minority workers. Some organizations that can be donated to are Equal Pay Today, the National Women’s Law Center, and the AAUW. Donations can support actions to remove the gender wage gap issue and achieve equality for women.
In order to further understand the concept of the gender wage gap, people should educate themselves though studying particular classes in school and reading workplace policies. There is a specific major in colleges that’s called Women’s Studies. This is a broad concept that includes historical and cultural production of sexual differences, and gender wage is a part of this study. Education is the most effective way to get rid of the gender wage gap and other stereotypes, and this statement holds true because knowledge allows people to understand the basis and the causes of every problem. Women’s studies is just one of the ways to accomplish this goal, there are many more ways people can learn to educate themselves through workplace laws and legislations. Society is moving towards improving and equalizing pays for women. But advocats, we cannot just depend on others, we have to educate ourselves and understand women's rights in order to fight against inequality.
We can make closing the gender gap a human rights priority. Some actions to solve the issue can be increasing the minimum wage, enforcing and expanding pay equity, and legislating equity compliance for workplaces and businesses. People can also introduce transparency to promotion, since pay and reward processes can reduce pay inequalities. Women often do not have a voice to address this matter. Thus, employers should clearly communicate the salary range on offer for a role to encourage women to negotiate their salary.
Equal Pay Today is a campaign that has been active for 15 years. The campaign works to close the wage gap that harms women of color and low-paid working women. The National Women’s Law Center is a United States non-profit organization founded in 1972 and based in Washington, D.C. The organization is referred to as NWLC, where they fight for gender justice in public policy and in our society. Last but not least, the AAUW - American Association of University Women - was founded in 1881. AAUW is a non-profit organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. By supporting these organizations, we can support bills to improve workplace justice and the economic security of women and families.
